MoBay spank Spanish Town Police FC 4-0 - Losing coach says they missed game plan at start
Montego Bay United FC (MBU) put to shame Spanish Town Police FC which totally misread the game plan, with a smashing 4-0 defeat during their Jamaica Premier League football match at the Montego Bay Sports Complex last night.
In the second match of the double-header, MBU's Josiah Trimmingham gave his team the lead early in the eighth minute, then Timar Lewis doubled the lead in the 27th. Substitute Deonjay Brown added to the tally in the 73rd minute, and 10 minutes later another substitute, Jahmari Clarke, joined the scoring party.
The win keeps MBU atop the league standings with 16 points - five wins, one loss and a draw - while newcomers Spanish Town Police, with their biggest losing deficit, are on one point, with six losses and one draw, to be sitting last in the standings.
CLEAN SHEET
Xavier Gilbert, MBU's head coach, emphasised their goal of continued growth as a team and maintaining top position.
"We had a clean sheet tonight and scored four goals," he admitted.
"In the first half we did some good things but in the second, I thought we started a little bit lacklustre. We were not aggressive in the opposition's half as we should. As the game progressed, we made some inroads in getting there," Gilbert added.
Spanish Town Police's head coach, William Spencer, admitted to a sub par performance due to a flawed game plan.
"We didn't play a good game today. We started off with the wrong game plan in terms of what we wanted to do," he said.
"We had seen improvements from the first game, and today is just one of those days we were just lacking," Spencer said.
OPENING GOAL
For the opening goal, the tall Trimmingham jumped highest to power a header and give his team the lead.
MBU's Nashardo Gibbs later delivered brilliant cross to Lewis, who controlled the ball and then hammered a shot with force past the keeper to double the lead.
Filled with frustration owing to conceding two goals in the first half, some players from Spanish Town Police were arguing with each other.
Substitutes Brown and Clarke would add salt into their wounds, adding some flavour with the additional goals to cement a big win.
TREASURE BEACH RALLY
In the earlier game of the double-header, Treasure Beach FC, coming off a two-game losing streak, rallied to a 1-1 draw with Harbour View FC.
Harbour View's Trayvon took the pleasure of scoring in the 15th minute. But 15 minutes later Treasure Beach's Raheem Porter levelled the score to make things interesting.
With this draw, both teams are tied on six points, and positioned in the standings at 11th and 12th, with Treasure Beach ahead by goal difference.
Head coach for Treasure Beach, Kemar Ricketts, emphasised the importance of accumulating points to stay in the league.
"It is not how you fall, it is how you brush yourself off and get up. I think this is one more point to what we want to achieve, which is to stay in the league," Ricketts said, stating there are things to improve on.
DEFEND BETTER
Ricketts further encouraged persistence.
"We have scored in every game, but we have conceded. We need to put a stop to conceding then we will be okay. We have to defend better," Ricketts added, noting that will be the focus in the upcoming days at practice.
Meanwhile, assistant coach for Harbour View, Sydney McFarlane, said the team needs to approach each match strategically.
"We will assess all things and how we will approach them in terms of how to defend and attack to get the result required," said McFarlane.
He identified the team's primary need for improvement on their finishing.
"We got a couple chances and didn't take them. We scored first and were on top, so we should have capitalised and held on for the win," added McFarlane.
GOALLESS FINISH
Racing United FC and Tivoli Gardens ended their game 0-0, while the scheduled main encounter between last year's beaten finalists Mount Pleasant Football Academy and Arnett Gardens FC was postponed owing to Mount Pleasant's participation in the Caribbean Concacaf championship. Mount Pleasant will be in regional action on Tuesday.
The competition continues today Molynes United FC face off with Portmore United and Waterhouse FC face Chapelton Maroon FC.
