Treasure Beach pull off smash-and-grab to down Arnett
Jaheim Harris scored the all-important penalty for Treasure Beach as they clipped Arnett Gardens 1-0 in the Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football competition last night at Drewsland Mini Stadium.
Harris stepped up in the 85th minute to convert from 12 yards out, handing Treasure Beach all three points.
In the earlier game, it was a similar narrow victory as Harbour View FC edged Dunbeholden FC 1-0, thanks to a penalty converted by Trayvon Reid, in the eighth minute.
The feature match was a clash of contrasting forms as red-hot Arnett Gardens went head-to-head with a Treasure Beach unit that entered the fixture with just one win in their last six games.
However, Linval Wilson, Treasure Beach's assistant coach, said they were also confident of securing the win.
"We had this discussion at the training ground that we were going up against a good Arnett team that was coming off of three wins," he said.
"The only thing we had to do was go out there and express ourselves and just play some good football."
He added, "We came out here and we showed them respect, but not too much respect."
BETTER CHANCES
The first half saw end-to-end action as both teams went searching for the opening goal. However, Arnett carved out the better opportunities.
Rushike Kelson proved a nuisance for Treasure Beach's backline and got his first shot on target from a tight angle in the sixth minute.
Daniel Hardy responded for Treasure Beach in the 40th minute, driving at goal but saw his shot crowded out and sent wide.
The second half saw Arnett increasing the tempo and sending waves of pressure at their opponents.
Treasure Beach held strong and were awarded a penalty kick late in the game after an ill-timed tackle near the edge of the box.
The man for the big moments, Harris, stepped up to the plate and converted, sending the ball to the right of the goalkeeper left flat-footed.
Arnett went searching for a late equaliser and came agonisingly close as Marlon Martin sent a shot from two yards crashing onto the crossbar.
A minute, Arnett saw a headed attempt also come back off the bar.
Phillip Williams, head coach of Arnett, said they were wasteful in front of goal, which proved their downfall.
"Not coming away with three points or even a point will always be disappointing," he said.
"We took too long to get into the game. Not taking anything away from the Treasure Beach team, I think they put together a decent 90 minutes but when we got in the game, we weren't able to convert our chances."
Treasure Beach now sit eighth in the JPL standings with eight points, just behind Arnett, who are seventh with nine.
Arnett's next outing see them facing Dunbeholden, while Treasure Beach turn their attention to Waterhouse in round eight action.
