Defending champions Garvey Maceo High bounced back to winning ways in the ISSA daCosta Cup after their 4-0 defeat to Glenmuir on Tuesday.

Playing at home in their Zone I second-round fixture yesterday, they edged Denbigh 2-1.

In the other match, Kemps Hill stunned Glenmuir 1-0 on home turf to hand them their first defeat of the season.

Victory against Denbigh was a welcome relief for Garvey Maceo's head coach, Lester Hibbert.

"Credit to the boys and thanks to God. They played their hearts out in what was a tough encounter," Hibbert said. "We faced a strong Denbigh team and had to play with 10 men for most of the game. It was the last home game for many of the players and they fought like champions and they were in tears at the end of the match."

Garvey Maceo played most of the game short-handed after Ashanti Johnson was shown a red card for dangerous play in just the second minute.

Yet still, they struck first in the 23rd minute when Daniel Scott scored a header from a corner kick, giving them a slim half-time lead.

Denbigh came out firing in the second half and equalised in the 63rd minute. Their leading scorer, Lashawn Barnaby, converted from the penalty spot.

The champions pressed on and got their reward in added time when substitute Rakeesh Jones dribbled past a defender and scored in 90+3 minutes.

The victory moved Garvey Maceo to 21 points, the same as Glenmuir, who were shocked 1-0 by Kemps Hill. Dalton Francis scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute.

Kemps Hill jumped to 16 points and third place, swapping spots with Denbigh, who remain on 13 points in fourth. The top three in the zone will advance to the round of 32.

Coach of Kemps Hill, Mitchell Kepshill, was not surprised by the upset.

"It was not a surprise win for us. Even when we lost 0-3 away to them last Saturday, we were competitive. At home, we were confident," he said.
